‘Kindness is having the ability to speak with love,

listen with patience, and act with compassion.”

Random Acts of Kindness Foundation

Join the Healing Story Alliance for a monthly gathering to share and explore stories of kindness in its many faces and forms. Through folk tales and personal stories, we will dive deeply into multiple experiences of kindness. What is it? How does it impact us and our relationships to ourselves, to each other, to the world? Come and listen to “kind stories” shared by both professional tellers and community members and see what memories of kindness emerge for you.

Date: April 3, 2022

Time: 6:00pm-7:30 pm CST/ 7:00pm-8:30pm EST

(Open Mic Story Share and Reflection: last half hour)

Format: The story session opens with a concert of seasoned tellers and community tellers sharing stories with themes of kindness. During the second half of the gathering, audience members are invited to share a story, moment, or reflection about kindness that emerged for them as listeners.

Purpose: We all need a little more kindness in our lives. Perhaps a story can take us there.

ABOUT the STORYTELLERS

Valerie Tutson is a multiple award-winning storyteller who has been performing in schools, churches, libraries, festivals and conferences since 1991. She draws her stories from around the world with an emphasis on African traditions. Her repertoire includes stories and songs she learned in her travels to South Africa, her experiences in West Africa and stories from African American history. She is a graduate of Brown University where she earned a Master’s degree in theater arts and a BA in her self-designed major of Storytelling as a Communications Art.

Anne Shimojima reminds us that to be human is to travel on the most fascinating journey of all, whether it is with a thoughtful story for adults, a funny folk tale for children, or the inspiring history of her Japanese American family’s experience in the incarceration camps during World War II. Her repertoire includes folk tales from around the world and historical pieces that help us find our place in the world today. A professional storyteller since 1982, Anne performs in festivals, schools, libraries, museums, senior communities, conferences, and anywhere people gather to hear a good story. Her thirty-five years as an elementary school library media specialist and decades of performing have given her a deep understanding of the universal truths we can all find in story.

Joseph Bruchac, for over forty years, has been creating literature and music that reflect his indigenous heritage and traditions. He is a proud Nulhegan Abenaki citizen and respected elder among his people. He is the author of more than 120 books for children and adults. His best selling Keepers of the Earth: Native American Stories and Environmental Activities for Children series, with its remarkable integration of science and folklore, continue to receive critical acclaim and to be used in classrooms throughout the country.
