Ubuntu Storytellers presents a special evening honoring our black and brown dads. Program will be available to ticket holders until July 10, 2021.
This is one is a series of presentation and workshops designed to change the narrative and deepen the empathy about being black and brown in the US.
We are thrilled to be showcasing nationally renowned tellers and a few newcomers whose names you will soon remember.
Nick Baskerville tells stories and jokes in the DC, MD, and VA area. He’s been featured on The Moth, The Story Collider, Better Said Than Done, and other shows. Nick is a frequent host for Better Said Than Done and Armed Service Art Performance (ASAP) storytelling shows both online and in-person. In addition to that, Nick is one of the four members of Clean AF Comedy that streams comedy weekly on Fridays at 6 pm EST on Facebook and YouTube. Elisabeth Anton has been telling stories ever since she recited Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham” whilst turning the pages of the book, thus pretending to read to impress her uncle. She began writing her stories down sometime thereafter, and has spent her life telling stories in a variety of forms. Elisabeth crafts compelling stories from her personal experiences of living internationally. She has told stories at the New Haven Festival of Arts and Ideas, Tellabration at the Institute Library, Buttonwood, Clinton Arts Council, Songs and Stories, and SpeakEasy.
Larry Castleberry is a father of 2 and currently lives in the city of Detroit. He holds a 6th degree black belt in the Japanese Martial Art of Aikido. Larry loves to intertwine the lessons of the martial art (discipline, perseverance, focus) with the lessons and experiences from his own life. He is an interactive storyteller who connects with the audience. Larry has been telling stories since kindergarten (ask his mother!!) and thoroughly enjoys the craft. A member of the National Association of Black Storytellers, the Detroit Association of Black Storytellers and Toast Masters International Larry has distinguished himself as a Competent Communicator Gold Member, competing and placing in numerous contests. Come hear this amazing storyteller entertain, delight and educate with his unique blend of theatrics, a baritone voice and interaction with the audience.
Steven H. Hobbs is a storyframer who structures stories around history, law, entrepreneurship, quilting, world culture, ethics and family. He tells stories to uplift the human spirit, build community and pursue social justice. Formerly a law professor, Hobbs earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Afro-American Studies from Harvard University and a juris doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
Amy Joy Myers is a Connecticut native, living the last 25 years in New Haven. She is a clinical social worker who lives in a house with a purple door, with her wife, pup and cat.
Ben Cunningham won Boston’s Big Mouth Off Story Slam at Boston Public Library’s Rabb Hall and was chosen to represent Massmouth in the Boston vs. Philly Story Slam at Philadelphia’s Book and Science Festivals. He was a guest storyteller at Massmouth’s 2012 BigMouthOff at Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline. He is 2021 Webby Winner – for his performance in Growing UP Black.
