The Tall Tale Contest is part of a grant from Easthampton City Arts in Massachusetts. It is free to enter and the winners receive a $50 prize and another winner, a $25 prize. Stories can be up to 8 minutes, with a minute grace, but shorter is even better. We have 6 contestants so far. Other names will be pulled from the HAT. So please call Gail and give your name right away with the name of your story. If you are a member of either National Storytelling Network( NSN) or NEST, mention that you are a member and you will have your name in the HAT twice, (no more than twice). You do not have to be a member of a storytelling organization to enter.
We have up to 90 minutes of telling, then voting.
Tall Tales and Lies are a tradition in Storytelling over the centuries and throughout nations. They can often be simply humorous, or sometimes emphasize occupational or a character’s personal prowess, called brags. Others are fantastic, sarcastic put downs, or they can be true personal experiences with outlandish, fanciful exaggerations. Sometimes truth is just stranger than fiction, and that’s no lie! Besides tradition tall tales of almost legendary people like Johnny Appleseed, Davy Crockett, etc. other tall stories are told by people who “had” the experience “first hand,” or “knew the character in the story”, or “knew” someone who “told” you about the location and the events of the character, or …. It helps to mention place names, a few little details. All welcome to join in.
