A pioneer in the American storytelling renaissance, she has appeared in theatres, schools, literature conferences, and major storytelling festivals throughout the United States and abroad since 1975. A modern-day bard, her dynamic fusion of original music, poetry, and the sung and spoken word brings multicultural folktales to life in the imagination of her listeners. She is a recipient of the Circle of Excellence Award presented by the National Storytelling Network for her performance skill and the 2021 Talking Leaves Award for her contributions to storytelling literature. An author of seven folktale recordings and ten folktale books, her published work has earned an American Library Association Notable Record Award, two Parent’s Choice Gold Awards, and five Storytelling World Honor Awards. Her musical monologue EARTHSONG won Best Composer in the 2021 United Solo Festival off Broadway. She views storytelling as both a fine art and a powerful tool for positive social change. Megan Wells is an award-winning and nationally respected storyteller, historical impersonator, actress and theater director. This extensive experience has allowed Megan to develop a vast repertoire of engaging stories, including traditional tales, multicultural myths, historical retellings, literary and personal stories. She holds an ORACLE Award with the National Storytelling Network as a Circle of Excellence recipient. Her theater awards include a Jeff Award for Direction as well as a 2020 nomination for solo performance. As the writer and storyteller for the Chicago Symphony’s Once Upon a Symphony program, Megan helped create an outreach program connecting children with classical music which included a fresh version of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling performed with Yo-Yo Ma. At 18, she visited Lebanon for the first time, where she met her grandmother and connected with the place she had known only through her father's stories. At 20, Katherine set off on a solo adventure with a one-way ticket to Hawaii, where she began writing. In 2022, at 33, she earned her BA in Cinematic Arts and New Media from Maharishi International University. Her work is shaped by the practice of dreamwork, time spent in nature, and the rich tapestry of her family’s stories. Known for her poetic style and ‘stories within stories,’ Katherine’s intergenerational work invites audiences right into the heart of her inner world. Her film, A Spring for Ali, has been screened at festivals from the Arab American Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, to Beirut, Lebanon. Recently, she was named a finalist in the International Storytelling Festival story slam. Katherine’s love of travel has taken her all over the world, but nowhere does she feel more enlivened than in Lebanon, where she now spends time regularly. She currently resides in Fairfield, Iowa, with her husband, where she sings, writes, and takes to the stage at every opportunity. Telling and retelling those stories with an ear and heart for the future enables everyone to actively celebrate each other’s lives past, present, and future. Join us as we discover new ways of uncovering - and sharing - the stories of our lives that matter to us. OARS in the Water is a facilitated Zoom gathering that meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 7 pm Eastern Time. The Healing Story Alliance’s OARS in the Water offers a community listening space in which to share the experiences and stories that have emerged in turbulent times. OARS co-hosts facilitate the evening and provide participants with a warm welcome and a meaningful theme which we hope will be healing, supportive and inspiring. Format: A typical 90-minute meeting consists of a 20-minute, theme-based opening, followed by 20 minutes in breakout rooms, and then we reassemble for a whole group conversation. Admission is free. Known for his collaboration, he has developed and offered dozens of workshops with storytellers from around the world, including Hears Crow, with whom he collaborates closely. Co-authored with Rebecca Lemaire, his book “Stories of the Heart” presents 18 global tales for navigating dying and living. Hears Crow (Nootauau Kaukôntuah) lives in the tradition of the Narragansett. As an educator, workshop leader, published poet, and facilitator of indigenous circles, she weaves teachings from the Longhouse, Indigenous ways, and Transformational Stories.
