Storytelling, unique among all narrative arts, engages listeners in a profound way, deepening our understanding of what healing means and how it functions. In this session, noted storyteller/author Jo Radner will interview Noa Baum about her book A Land Twice promised: An Israeli Woman’s Quest for Peace. Audience participation is encouraged, with opportunities to ask questions and share observations inspired by Noa’s work and the interview. Anne Shimojima has been telling stories of her Asian heritage and from around the world in festivals, schools, libraries and museums for over forty years. Her signature piece Hidden Memory describes her Japanese American family’s experience in the incarceration camps during World War II. Anne recently received the Circle of Excellence Award from the National Storytelling Network. Beth Horner is noted as a vivacious talent dedicated to providing an entertaining and empowering experience for her listeners, young and old. With a comic sensibility and warm, energetic style, Beth possesses a repertoire of stories that has been called “heartfelt, articulate and truthful.” She has performed many times at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough Tenn. and will be a featured teller there again this year - Oct 4-6. Megan Wells is a full-time professional touring storyteller and a sought-after Storytelling Coach. For thirty-four years Megan has been telling every kind of story to adults and children alike. The concert will highlight and celebrate the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters “to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of Youth.” Van Egmond will weave together songs and stories about the special gifts young people have, and the challenges they face (like in their relationships with older folks). Join in on songs like “You’ve Got To Talk My Language,” become spellbound in stories like “The Boy Who Turned Himself Into A Peanut!” Van Egmond will accompany himself on guitar, hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, and limberjack (a dancing wooden puppet that taps out a rhythm on a paddleboard). How is it created? Does the story itself help to create sacred space, or does the teller need to create a space for the story to be heard? Come join Christine and Lani as we explore these ideas together through our shared experiences of story’s sacred space. She offers opportunities for individuals and organizations to tap into their creativity to give voice to their stories whether they be true, tall or traditional tales. Christine loves how stories challenge, heal, entertain, develop and delight both the tellers and the audience. Christine is the convener of the Weaving Stories Together – biennial Sydney International Storytelling Conferences and president of the Australian Storytelling Guild NSW. For over 35 years she has conducted teacher in-service programs, retreats and workshops with children and adults, lectured in Story and Drama in Education at the University of Western Sydney and provided individual coaching and mentoring for people keen to expand their storytelling skills. She believes in the transformative power of Storytelling. Lani Peterson, PsyD, is a psychologist, storyteller, and story coach who has been teaching about the power of story at universities, organizations, hospitals, homeless shelters, and prisons for over 25 years. She is known for telling and encouraging personal stories, has a specialty in story exploration as a healing art and change agent. She holds a doctorate in psychology from William James College, a master’s in counseling psychology from Lesley University and an undergraduate degree in literature from Smith College. She has taught Effective Organizational Communications Skills for Non-Profit Leaders in the master’s program at Wheelock College as well as Healing through our Stories in the Expressive Therapies master’s track at Lesley University. From CEO’s to scientists, doctors, mental health providers, ministers and the homeless, Lani has worked with individuals, groups and organizations to help people find their stories, share their stories, and come together with a deeper level of connection and understanding. Her ongoing mission is to bring to light and share the stories that will open doors within and between storytellers and listeners alike.
