• Set the Scene Storytelling Workshop

Workshops led by Better Said Than Done Executive Director Jessica Piscitelli Robinson. June 3 Storytelling Workshop: Setting the Scene Where are we, where did we come from, what are we carrying and who are we meeting? Learn to bring the audience with you as you step into a scene. Each workshop will start with a lesson, followed by time for attendees to write and work on a story, and end with story sharing. All workshops will be recorded and all registrants will receive the recording, as well as course materials, for the session they registered for. Each week starts at 7:00pm Eastern and will end at approximately 8:45 to 9:00pm. The zoom link to attend will be sent on the morning of that day’s workshop, and the recording will be sent within 48 hours. Workshop led by Jessica Piscitelli Robinson. Jessica Robinson is the Founding Executive Director of Better Said Than Done, the organization behind the Women’s Storytelling Festival. In addition to producing the WSF and storytelling shows in Northern Virginia, Jessica has performed at the Exchange Place at National Storytelling Festival, and the Georgia Mountain Storytelling Festival, on WGBH’s “Stories from the Stage,” and the Risk! Podcast, and was featured in the Florida, Good Liars Club, Hampton, and Stone Soup Storytelling Festivals. Jessica is a 2023 ORACLE Award recipient from the National Storytelling Network. Jessica has taught storytelling workshops for Story Crossroads, The Story Center, and community and business organizations such as The Brookings Institution, George Mason University’s Athletics Department, George Washington University’s School of Business, and The World Bank. Jessica’s writing has been published a bunch of places and she is the author of the memoir-in-stories, Stages: My Life in Stories (Tucker DS Press).

Whether through personal narrative, traditional material, games, or fiction, shared stories help us talk about difficult things so we can recognize common ground, find more healing, and help others. Sharing these stories requires special attention to the needs of both the story crafter and the audience. This three-session Zoom workshop (May 14, 21, and 28) will help you shape your difficult story so you can share it safely, the audience can experience it deeply without worrying about you or themselves, and will give you the tools you need for a crafted, powerful story. If participants choose, we will have a recital so they can share their stories with others.

In this session, Elisa Pearmain will interview Susan Perrow about her book Stories to Light the Night, a collection of over 90 therapeutic stories designed to help children, families, and communities navigate grief, loss, and separation, covering topics like the death of a loved one, loss of a pet, divorce, and environmental grief. Published in 2021, the book uses storytelling as a tool for healing, offering a diverse selection of tales from various cultures to provide comfort and help reframe difficult experiences. This event benefits The Healing Storytelling Alliance, dedicated to promoting healing through the art of storytelling. About the Author Susan Perrow, M.Ed.Hons is an Australian author who works with ‘story medicine’. She writes, collects and documents stories that offer a therapeutic journey – a positive, imaginative way of addressing challenging behaviors and traumatic situations for all ages, including environmental grief and loss. In 2000 she developed a 150-hour unit on Storytelling for Southern Cross University and completed her Masters Research on Storytelling in Cross-cultural Situations. From 2001 to 2003, as the coordinator of a pilot program funded by the Australian Government under its “Developing Stronger Families” Project, she developed courses and resources for Parent Support, specializing in therapeutic storytelling. For the past 20 years she has travelled internationally giving keynotes and therapeutic story-writing seminars for teachers, therapists and parents world-wide, and now runs trainings online. Her work has led to the publication of four resource books, all by Hawthorn Press U.K., and now in 14 languages – ‘Healing Stories for Challenging Behavior’, ‘Therapeutic Storytelling: 101 Healing Stories for Children’, ‘An A-Z Collection of Behavior Tales’ and ‘Stories to Light the Night: A Grief and Loss Collection for Children, Families and Communities’. In 2023 she launched her first audio APP for smartphones and tablets. Entitled ‘Rainbowtales.app’ it offers 101 therapeutic stories told by professional narrators across six categories. A mother of three sons, and a grandmother of six, her home is in Lennox Head on the East Coast of Australia.
