HSA OARS in the Water: The Roots of Remembrance
HSA OARS in the Water: The Roots of Remembrance Link to Event: https://healingstoryalliance.org/oars-themes-2022/oars/ Event Website: https://healingstoryalliance.org/ Event Phone: 16517038191 Event Contact Email: ahealingstoryalliance@gmail.com HSA presents OARS in the Water: The Roots of Remembrance Wednesday, March 26th at 7:00-8:30 pm EDT Hosted by Sara DeBeer & Mary Jo Maichack Each one of us is constantly creating new memories and reliving experiences whose seeds were planted in our past. Join us as we explore how a special place or object can evoke a memory, perhaps even one we’ve forgotten. Walking in a forest or holding the collar of a beloved pet might be just what we need to reconnect with a precious memory. OARS in the Water is a facilitated Zoom gathering that meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 7 pm Eastern Time. The Healing Story Alliance’s OARS in the Water offers a community listening space in which to share the experiences and stories that have emerged in turbulent times. OARS co-hosts facilitate the evening and provide participants with a warm welcome and a meaningful theme which we hope will be healing, supportive and inspiring. Format: A typical 90-minute meeting consists of a 20-minute, theme-based opening, followed by 20 minutes in breakout rooms, and then we reassemble for a whole group conversation. Admission is free, although donations are deeply appreciated and help support our programming. Your tax-deductible donation can be made here: https://square.link/u/d9xbGN2I WE HAVE A NEW ZOOM LINK TO BOOKMARK: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81580670118?pwd=kluogEmpqp8COl7mWvvDl673CCozLS.1 About our Hosts Mary Jo Maichack has made her full-time living as a singer-storyteller for thirty-five years. She lost count at some 4,000 shows, workshops and residencies from hay bales to gorgeous stages here and in Europe, on PBS live, and for the National Storytelling Network. Her teaching artist work in countless schools culminated in the offer of a book contract from ABC/Clio: From Stage Door to Classroom Floor: Playing with Folktales for Joyful Literacy. She decided to self-publish, but that’s another story. She won two NAPPA (National Association of Parenting Magazines) awards--gold and honors, for her CDs. In the last decade she has spent more time performing the American songbook in cabaret shows with pianists, and leads workshops in memoir writing in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. Sara deBeer’s great love is telling traditional folktales from world cultures. Listeners discover the richness of each individual culture while also appreciating the universality of human experiences. Sara works in schools, libraries, synagogues, and independent/assisted living facilities, as well as a variety of other venues. An experienced classroom teacher with degrees from Yale and Bank Street, Sara offers workshops on a variety of topics. Participants develop new insights about storytelling, guided by Sara's expertise in both education and the arts. Sara is also a published poet; she teaches poetry-writing classes for Beat of The Street (BOTS), a program for people who are homeless or who have experienced homelessness. Sara’s most recent book of poetry, “Traveling Backward Through Time”, is available at lulu.com.
